The Trial (1)

Preparatory statement to be given or read aloud to Jobcentre staff at the beginning of 'work-focused' interviews:

I am attending this appointment solely because it is a condition of receiving the Unemployment Benefit (or so-called 'Jobseeker's Allowance') to which I am entitled. I wish to emphasise that this compulsory 'work-focused' interview is of no practical use to me whatsoever. I am a responsible and literate adult, capable of identifying vacancies, filling in application forms and talking to employers on my own. I do not require advice, training, support or rehabilitation. Similarly, I resent having to provide evidence that I am 'seeking' (and not 'hiding' from) work, and find such demands petty and degrading.

My engagement with the Jobcentre's discourse of bureaucratic surveillance will be limited to the formalities of my benefit claim - a claim which, by your organisation's own criteria, is entirely justified. I will be co-operative and truthful throughout this meeting; but this should not be taken to mean that I approve of the Jobcentre's institutional script, which stigmatises its 'customers' as an economic inconvenience, and bullies people into accepting exploitative or tenuous jobs and abandoning future claims altogether, thereby keeping the official unemployment figures artificially low.

Having made clear my position, I will perform the role of 'Jobseeker' allocated to me, until such time as I take a job which I deem worthwhile, just as I expect you to play the role of Jobcentre Advisor, in accordance with your duties, in order to keep your own job until such time as you decide to leave it.

Now, GIVE ME THE MONEY AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY FACE.

Thank you.
